The Women’s NGO Network of Latvia
The Women’s NGO Network of Latvia was founded 24 September 2003. The Network consists of 52 Latvian women’s organisations or organisations’ women’s sections. Since October 12, 2003 the Network has been a member organization of the European Women’s Lobby. Marta Centrs is the leading organisation of the network and it holds its secretariat.
The Network promotes equal rights, opportunities and responsibilities between men and women in Latvia and lobbies to integrate the principle of gender equality into all fields of policy-making as well as the decision-making process in Saeima, in the government and at municipal level. The Network’s mission is to create and maintain a functioning consultative process between civil society and the decision-making bodies in Latvia as well as in Europe concerning questions of gender equality.
A quick reaction to events, issues and laws handled in Saeima, in government departments, The Cabinet of Ministers and in the European Union is essential. The Network aims at full use of its member organisations’ capacities to analyze the possible discriminating aspects of policies. On the bases of gender, it monitors the fulfilment of human rights and equal opportunities between women and men.
Principles of the Network:
1. carrying out of political analyses;
2. ensuring the monitoring of policy-making and picking up the possible discriminatory practices on the basis of gender; monitoring the fulfilment of human rights and equal opportunities;
3. defending the interests of civil society and/or the NGO Network in the decision-making processes in Latvia as well as in Europe
4. developing the capacities of the Women’s NGO Network of Latvia.
