Round-table Discussion on Exit Programs

On October 27, 2015 MARTA organized an exchange of experiences event in the Ministry of Welfare of the Republic of Latvia as part of the European Commission's project “Safety Compass - Signposting Ways to Escape Trafficking” activities. The event was organised as a Round Table discussion and audience involved mainly NGO and state representatives. The main emphasis was on acquiring knowledge from European experts from other countries in order to develop functioning exit programs for women that have been involved in prostitution.

Latvian MPs join the Call by the Coalition for the Abolition of Prostitution

On November 10, 2015 Resource Centre for Women MARTA invited Latvian Parliamentarians to take a stand on the abolition of prostitution by joining the global campaign of the Coalition for the Abolition of Prostitution (CAP International).

UN 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence “Aim Speak Act” 26.11.2015

Since 2013 the United Nations Organization has been calling the governments, self-governments and inhabitants of all countries of the world to become involved and focus upon preventing gender related violence. 16 days against violence in the world begin on 25 November, on the day dedicated to fighting violence against women, and continue until 10 December, the International Human Rights Day.


ACT TO STOP Sexual violence in childhood!

The specialists of MARTA center, working on daily basis with clients, who have suffered sexual abuse in childhood, find unacceptable the public statements by professionals regarding the traumas inflicted upon victims and the transient and treatable consequences of complications caused by them, which, perhaps, explains the disproportionality of the sentences imposed.

World Childhood Foundation have a long time collaboration with Resource Center for Women MARTA, funding the program for social rehabilitation of children victims of sexual abuse and their non-abusive parent. This year World Childhood Foundation introduced Silver Lining grant to provide activity that would give children an opportunity to forget the hardships by playing and having fun.

MARTA urges Amnesty International to Protect the Most Vulnerable Women 11.08.2015

MARTA, alongside other women rights movements, calls upon all Amnesty International members to take the steps necessary to protect the human rights of prostituted persons and reject the Amnesty International proposed policy of full decriminalization of the sex industry, including the decriminalization of those who inflict abuse, violence and torture on women and children in the sex trade.

Why sex-offenders in Latvia remain jail-free?

The most recent lenient court judgment in Liepaja, a western-most sea-side town of Latvia, adopting sentences of 240 hours of community service and one year probation period for the two adult men pleading guilty of repeated and prolonged lewd conduct with a minor (5 year old girl) have highlighted the dismissive attitudes towards sex offenders within the Latvian justice system, as well as the impact of these attitudes on the society at large.

Resource Centre for Women "Marta" is working with victims of human trafficking since 2002

During the period from 2006 to 2008 and since 2015, assistance to victims is ensured within national rehabilitation program. The service includes individual social worker, psychologist, lawyer, health care specialist and other professionals assistance according to personal needs of clients, as well as support in criminal proceedings, secure shelter, transportation costs and other assistance to facilitate customers' reintegration in society and the labor market.

Recommendations for Prevention of Gender Based Violence and Women’s Economic Empowerment

During the conference Prevention of Violence – Precondition for Economic Empowerment of Women (Riga, 3rd March 2015) the participants representing women’s organisations and non-governmental organizations from a number of countries developed a series of recommendations within the scope of UN Millenium Development Goals and post-2015 sustainable development agenda.
